How Does AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicle) Avoid Obstacle

Recently, automation is ideally used in variety of areas, like unmanned sales, unmanned driving, unmanned factory. The AGV related to logistics are unmanned sorting robot, unmanned truck and unmanned forklift. More and more new AGV technologies are coming to our lives.

AGV is mainly used for allocating products and calculating the best way to forklift. Obtaining the information which includes the product size, shape and location in the circumstance is the first step for both guiding and avoidance. There are variety of sensors used in avoidance. Each of them has specific principles and features. In nowadays, the most popular types of sensors are ultrasonic, vision, laser and infrared sensors.

Ultrasonic is a low cost, easy and mature solution. Ultrasonic sensor releases a pulse width of several kHz with piezoelectric or static electric transmitter.  Then it can calculate the distance by the time of ultrasonic flight. Obtain information about obstacles around itself, including the size, shape, and location of obstacles.

Sensor is the eye of robot. Audiowell publishes the car level ultrasonic sensor to take place traditional infrared and laser sensor, which can help AGV achieve automatic avoidance. While there are several vehicles, sensors can keep each car away from other ones and obstacles. Ultrasonic sensor can detect 90 degree in horizontal and 45 degree in vertical. The effective detection distance is about 5 meters, which keeps the reliability and stability. Compared to radar’s 2D horizontal detection, sensors can identify small obstacles easily.

Because sound transfers in cone, the signal detected is not a point, but all obstacles in the detection range. The calculation program inside the sensor can manage all the obstacle information, and output the location of the nearest obstacle.

While the sensor detects any objects in the detecting range, it will send the location of nearest obstacle to AGV control system and reduce the speed of robot to stop. If the obstacle is not in the direction of robot, the sensor will not have any reaction even the obstacle gets close in order to keep the high efficiency.

The vehicle uses a laser point cloud combined with a high-precision map to perform local path planning, and obtains several to-be-selected tracks.Then trace the obstacle information from ultrasonic and calculate in the location of vehicle. After fix the to-be-selected tracks, the program will get the best track. When there is a obstacle in the moving direction of the vehicle and the distance is less than safe length, the vehicle will stop.
